December Shows in Atlanta, #1-9 (with a Spotify Playlist)

It’s that time of year again… the month of lists! With everyone making 2013 lists for top album, song, video, etc., I thought it would be a good time to bring back the top Nine Local shows to see this month in Atlanta. Several bands local to Atlanta and Athens are on the list, including repeat appearances on Nine Local by Quiet Hounds, Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, Gringo Star, Turf War and Futurebirds. See the complete list below and go support live music!

#1:  Brazos at 529 with Ski Lodge and  Minor Miracles – 12/13 | 9PM | $8 – Get Tickets

With so many repeats making the list this month, I decided to go with some recent discoveries at the #1 spot. Listen to “How the Ranks was Won” from Brazos’ latest album, Saltwater, and “Just to be like You” from Ski Lodge’s debut album, Big Heart. Good sounds coming out of New York!

#2: Jason Isbell at Buckhead Theatre with St. Paul & the Broken Bones – 12/6 | 9PM – SOLD OUT

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit made our list in November of 2012. Jason returns with a solo set while fellow Birmingham natives, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, open the show. Listen to the soulful sounds of SPBB here:

Hey Pickwick, Atlanta Wants You to #Get2ATL!

Pickwick has never played in Atlanta and I’m sharing this until they do (part of our #Get2ATL series):

Update:  Pickwick played their first Atlanta gig in April, 2013, our #1 show that month!

Thanks to Sound on the Sound, I first heard Seattle’s Pickwick in 2011 after videos were recorded in the band’s basement and on the shore of the Doe Bay in Orcas Island, Washington.  This soulful six-piece band has since released an EP, Covers, which includes a version of Richard Swift’s “Lady Luck” and features the lovely Sharon Van Etten.  Pickwick’s debut album, Can’t Talk Medicine, will be available March 12th on Dine Alone Records.

Live from the basement: “Hacienda Motel” and “Window Sill”

Live from Doe Bay:  “Staged Names” and “Hacienda Motel”

More from Pickwick:

Stay tuned… this blog post will be updated periodically and as soon as the first Atlanta gig is announced!

Update (2/4/13):  Pickwick is coming to Atlanta!  Spring tour dates were announced today and the band will be playing at The Earl in East Atlanta Village on April 30th.  Tickets on sale this Friday, February 8th.

January Shows in Atlanta, #6: Gringo Star at The Earl

Atlanta, Fri. 1/11:  Go see Gringo Star at The Earl!  With a new album coming this spring, one of Atlanta’s favorite indie rock bands begin their “Going Way Out” tour with a 7″ release show in East Atlanta.  I’ve never seen them live, but I heard the four members share lead vocals and change instruments between songs.  That’s enough to peak my interest.

From their sophomore album, Count Yer Lucky Stars

  • Doors: 9pm / Show: 9:30pm
  • Openers:  Mood Rings, Baby Baby
