December Shows in Atlanta, #1-9 (with a Spotify Playlist)

It’s that time of year again… the month of lists! With everyone making 2013 lists for top album, song, video, etc., I thought it would be a good time to bring back the top Nine Local shows to see this month in Atlanta. Several bands local to Atlanta and Athens are on the list, including repeat appearances on Nine Local by Quiet Hounds, Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics, Gringo Star, Turf War and Futurebirds. See the complete list below and go support live music!

#1:  Brazos at 529 with Ski Lodge and  Minor Miracles – 12/13 | 9PM | $8 – Get Tickets

With so many repeats making the list this month, I decided to go with some recent discoveries at the #1 spot. Listen to “How the Ranks was Won” from Brazos’ latest album, Saltwater, and “Just to be like You” from Ski Lodge’s debut album, Big Heart. Good sounds coming out of New York!

#2: Jason Isbell at Buckhead Theatre with St. Paul & the Broken Bones – 12/6 | 9PM – SOLD OUT

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit made our list in November of 2012. Jason returns with a solo set while fellow Birmingham natives, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, open the show. Listen to the soulful sounds of SPBB here:

May Shows in Atlanta, #1-9 (with a Spotify Playlist)

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’m moving to Nashville!  But that doesn’t mean @NineLocal will not continue recommending shows in Atlanta.  I’ll be doing it myself or have someone help me, but for the month of May, there will not be individual posts for the top 9 shows.  This list, however, is the top 9 shows to see in May.  So get out there and support live music!

Update: As of 10/1/2013, I’m officially back in Atlanta. Nashville is amazing, but my “day job” brought me back home.

New Music: Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics, Two Gallants and The Sheepdogs

This week’s top 3 new releases are also three artists from our top 9 local shows to see in Atlanta this month.

First… It’s About Time by Atlanta’s own Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics.  Ruby says she grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding and It’s About Time is obviously influenced by those same soulful sounds of the 50’s and 60’s.

Second…  The Blight and The Bloom by San Francisco’s Two Gallants.  Available on ATO Records, The Blight and The Bloom, is this folk-punk duo’s 4th studio album, offering a mix of mellow tunes and raw, scrappy blues rock.

Third…  The Sheepdogs by Saskatchewan, Canada’s The Sheepdogs.  Their 4th studio album, produced by Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, has a sweet southern rock sound, reminiscent of the classic rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s.
