Parties celebrating The End of the World and New Year’s Eve topped December’s list of top 9 live music shows to see in Atlanta. Click on a link to get more information and enjoy tunes on our Spotify playlist below. See ya at the show!
Atlanta, Mon. 12/31: Bring in the new year with Ponderosa and N.E.C. at Vinyl! As much as I loved Ponderosa’s debut album, Moonlight Revival, I was equally impressed with this year’s sophomore effort, Pool Party. The transition from a southern rock “twang” to a softer psychedelic sound “is so dramatic that it’s hard to believe this is the same band,” says Megan Farokhmanesh at Paste Magazine. And it’s true. On New Year’s Eve, they might only play tunes from Pool Party or a combination of both albums. But either way, this show is more than the #1 NYE show in Atlanta… it’s my top pick for the month of December!
Atlanta, 12/21-12/22: If you were wondering where to celebrate the “end of the world” this year, the best times will be had at The Masquerade and Terminal West! And you can do both! Futurebirds, of Athens, will be playing two nights at Terminal West. I recommend Saturday (assuming the world survives) for two reasons. Natural Child & local band, Turf War, are also on the lineup that night… duh! And choosing the second night allows you party with Atlanta’s Stokeswood on Friday at The Masquerade! So buy your tickets to both before they sell out and get ready to party like it’s 1999… 0r 2012… or whatever.
Atlanta, Thu. 12/11: Go see The Lone Bellow at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur! I just discovered The Lone Bellow, thanks to a recent post by Brian Tremml at Paste Magazine. Tremml says, “The band refers to their upcoming release as a ‘collection of stories embodying tragedy, hope, betrayal and redemption.'” Those stories can be purchased on their self-titled album starting January 22 and if the entire album sounds like the three videos below, this Brooklyn band will go places in 2013! And you know they’ll blow the roof off at Eddie’s Attic on 12/11 with harmonies like this…
Atlanta, Sat. 12/8: For week 2 of this year’s Winter Wonder Jam, go see Marc Broussard and David Ryan Harris at Atlantic Station! I’m beginning to think Marc loves Atlanta as much as we love him… and his 4th visit to Atlanta in the last 12 months is sure to be another good time! Whether he brings the funk, the blues, a little rock or the soulful sounds of the Bayou, he will have you walking away wanting more.
Get there early! If I could write, sing and play guitar like one man, it would be David Ryan Harris… which confirms accusations that I’m a bit of a hopeless romantic (i.e. “For You” [see video]). DRH returns to a city he once called home and with support from Atlanta local, Ben Deignan, this lineup is sure to provide a sweet atmosphere of “love and happiness…”
Atlanta, Sun. 12/30: Go see Umphrey’s McGee with Moon Taxi at The Tabernacle! Progressive rock band, Umphrey’s McGee, will be in Atlanta playing a 4 night New Year’s Eve party! I chose the third night because I’m also a big Moon Taxi fan, but you can’t go wrong choosing the 1st or 2nd night (New Year’s Eve is already sold out!). For an idea of what a live Umphrey’s McGee show is like, enjoy this live version of “Puppet String” from Red Rocks Amphitheatre…
Atlanta, Tue. 12/4: Go see Lee Fields & the Expressions at The Masquerade! Fields, who has been making soul music since 1969, recently teamed up with The Expressions on Truth & Soul’s record label in Brooklyn, NY. The result has been two “tough as nails and sweet as honey” albums. The latest, Faithful Man, is contemporary soul at its best, with songs like “Wish You Were Here” and “You’re the Kind of Girl” (see video). Don’t miss this night… the band’s first show in Atlanta!
